Chateaux, Croissants & Cycle Paths

Tales from the French Highways & Byways

In what to his doctor (and many others) seemed like a crazy idea, Doug Hendry traded in his sedentary lifestyle for a summer two-wheeling through France. Together with his partner Katrina Merkies, they covered over 3,200 kilometres and climbed the equivalent height of two Mount Everest’s.

They were able to cover quite varied terrain from leisurely canal tow-paths and Mediterranean boardwalks via winding mountain roads to steep vineyard maintenance ways (along with a few muddy paths and at least one field). They even were able to include a week helping to build a castle using only medieval techniques.

Along the way, in between gasping for breath, they were able to take note of some differences between our own and the French lifestyle.

Please come to hear Doug regale us with some tales from his carbon-neutral travels and some reflections on a few things we can perhaps learn about sustainability from the Old World, to help make the New World a better place.

Sustainable North Grenville’s events are open to everyone; they’re free unless otherwise indicated. Coffee, tea and sweets are available by donation, plus a cash bar. Rumour has it that there will be ACTUAL croissants there!! Berets optional!
